Missiology

Missiology is Clay's area of specialty. He earned a DMin in Missiology at RTS in 1986, and his PhD is in the Theology and worldwide expansion of Presbyterianism. Missiology is the study of the cross-cultural MISSION of the Church of Jesus Christ. The LORD, the Creator of all Mankind, gave this mission to us: "Go ye into all the world" with this Good News! It is not merely organizational expansion -- it is ESSENTIAL to who we are and what EVERY Christian should be doing until Jesus returns.

DOCTRINE

  • We believe Scripture itself, being God's own living Word, is above all creeds and formulations of men. Nevertheless, creeds are helpful to clarify right teaching and create cooperation among Christians.
  • In Scripture itself, we find the GOSPEL:
  • Along with all Christians, we believe in the historic Christian creeds:
    • The Apostles' Creed
    • The Nicene Creed (AD 325)
    • Chalcedon (AD 451)
  • Along with all Protestants, we believe:
    • Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura:
(By Faith alone, By Grace alone, Based on Scripture alone)
  • Along with other Reformed churches, we believe in the Reformed formulations:
    • Westminster Confession of Faith
    • Westminster Larger Catechism
    • Westminster Shorter Catechism

These last are the Constitutional basis of our joint communion in the EPCU.
The ERSU seminary is also committed to the older Reformed creeds called "the 3 Forms of Unity":

      • Belgic Confession (1561)
      • Heidelberg Catechism (1563)
      • Canons of Dort (1618-1619)
  • SCRIPTURE ALONE, being God's own living Word, is the arbiter of all debates, being valued far above all modern or ancient writers:

"The Supreme Judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture." (WCF I.10)
